Let us help you with your school accreditation process. Moving from licensed to accredited in 4 milestones.
In a Nutshell
This page includes a list of common terms and concepts you may encounter as you learn about accreditation. Understanding these concepts will help you choose the accrediting agency that best supports your school’s goals.
Licensed vs Accredited Status
A State License is required for a vocational or trade school, college, or university to operate. This license is issued by the state in which the institution is physically located.
Accreditation, on the other hand, is a voluntary certification process that licensed institutions pursue to (1) enable their students to access financial aid and other funding sources and (2) comply with specific board or professional requirements.
Institutional vs Programmatic
Institutional Accreditation applies to the entire school and includes all licensed programs. Institutional accreditation enables institutions to apply for federal financial aid and other funding opportunities. Examples include: ACCSC, COE, ABHES, DEAC, NACCAS, TRACS, HLC, SACSCOC and MSCHE.
Programmatic Accreditation applies to specific programs as required by a licensing board or professional practice. Programs that require programmatic accreditation include nursing, engineering, and law. Programmatic accreditation does NOT qualify an institution to apply for Title IV federal financial aid for its students. Examples include: ACEN, CAAHEP, JRCERT, and LCME.
National vs Regional Accreditation
National Accreditors focus on career, vocational, and technical schools that prepare students for specific occupations. Examples include COE, ABHES, ACCSC, TRACS, DEAC, NACCAS, and ACCET.
Regional Accreditors traditionally focus on colleges and universities and are often viewed as more prestigious. Their accreditation processes tend to be longer, more comprehensive, and more costly. Examples include SACSCOC, HLC, MSCHE, NWCCU, and WASC.
Applying for Federal Financial Aid
While there are many accrediting agencies to choose from, only the ones recognized by the US Department of Education as institutional accrediting agencies will establish the eligibility for your institution to participate in Title IV federal student aid programs.
Once institutional accreditation is achieved, schools may begin the Federal Financial Aid application process. Historically, Title IV funding has been limited to degree and clock-hour programs with a duration of 600+ hours. Regulatory revisions are expected to expand eligibility to shorter programs beginning July 1, 2026.

Our accreditation consulting packages
Licensed to Accredited in 4 Milestones
Our accreditation consulting package is built around four proven milestones that take your institution from licensed to accredited in as little as 18 to 24 months, depending on the accreditation cycle and your school’s readiness.
1 - Aligning with Accreditation Standards.
2 - Implementing Annual Evaluations.
3 - Preparing Applications & SER Report.
4 - Preparing Visits & Exhibits.
This approach allows your institution to commit to one objective and one consulting fee at a time. You may cancel our services at any time without penalties. Each module focuses on one of the Licensed to Accredited Milestones, aligns with 2026 standards, and includes ten (10) live Zoom training sessions.
Institutional accreditation is typically one of the eligibility requirements for schools to become VA training providers. Once approved, students may use their veteran benefits to pay for their program of study at your school
